Having an Oprah Ah-Ha Moment

back

Have you ever had a light bulb moment? A split second when everything becomes crystal clear? That happened recently to someone I was chatting with at a women's show. We were talking about our tendency to put the most important things in life on hold when all of a sudden she blurted out:

I just had an Oprah ah-ha moment!

The idea that we all have a limited amount of time, no matter how long we live, instantly jelled for her. She realized in that moment that many of her choices were quite frankly a waste of her precious time.

The insight contained in a light bulb moment is not necessarily rocket science. Sometimes you're even taken aback at how surprisingly simple the revelation is. What makes the light go on is simply the perfect convergence of information and readiness. It's a concrete example of the saying:

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

You may have heard a message a thousand times and it never had practical meaning for you. You may have read books on the same theme but they didn't quite hit home. You may have had the knowledge but not the willingness to act on it. Insights are moments of connection. All of a sudden you experience an "I get it" feeling and something that has eluded you in the past makes perfect sense. The sad thing is that most people let their light bulb moments fade into the dark.

Have you ever had an insight but didn't act on it?

An ah-ha is only as good as what you do with it. Think of the lights going on as a little gift from the universe - your personal invitation to take a step forward toward your best life. Change occurs when you do or think about something differently than the way you have been in the past. Take the light bulb moment as a beacon pointing you in a new direction. Translate your new awareness into action by asking yourself, "Now what?"
