5 Simple Habits to Start Your Day
Back
How you start your day has a tremendous impact on how your day unfolds. Even when life brings you unexpected chaos, a positive start to the day allows you to roll with obstacles and complications with greater ease.
Consider your current morning habits. Do they set you up for success? Do they leave you feeling grounded and happy? If not, you can begin to create some new habits. Start by adding or substituting one new habit. Then when you have settled into that one, you can add another.
Remember:
Small changes done consistently produce great results.
Try these simple ideas to start your day:
1. Set an intention.
Your thoughts create your reality so you might as well start before you've even lifted your head off the pillow. Take a few minutes before you get out of bed to think about your day.
Ask yourself:
What do I want to create today?
What core value do I want to honor today?
If things get busy or off track, what's the most important thing for me to remember today?
By bringing your awareness and intention to the day, you are more likely to make conscious choices in actions and attitudes as the day unfolds.
2. Eat breakfast.
Yes I know you've heard this a million times...and your mother was right. Starting your day with breakfast gets your metabolism reving, helps you concentrate better, provides you with essential nutrients and aids in weight loss or maintenance.
Eating breakfast is just a habit. Try getting up 10 minutes earlier or keep portable breakfast foods handy. Consider breakfast as your first spiritual offering to your body of the day.
3. Practice a grounding ritual.
It's easy in a hectic life to lose touch with yourself. When that happens you are more likely to make unconscious choices during the day. Practicing a simple grounding ritual in the morning lets you re-connect with your core values and inner wisdom. Grounding rituals include things like meditation, journalling, prayer, quiet reflection, or walking. Or you may have another ritual that works best for you. Setting aside 15 minutes each morning for such a ritual helps you stay closely connected to your most authentic self.
4. Stretch.
Just as your body has been fasting for several hours, it has also been inactive. A simple stretching routine allows you to re-connect with your body and reawaken your muscles. In addition to enhancing your physical flexibility, this is also your opportunity to check in with the wisdom of your body.
Ask yourself:
Where am I holding tension or feeling stiff?
What do I need to let go of or release?
5. Hug a loved one.
Share your great start to the day with someone you love. A simple hug or other sign of affection feeds both your soul and the other person's. It's a simple habit that takes only a moment. When we feel loved, everything seems possible.
